The national median for software and applications programmers is about $131,900 a year full time, and Sydney senior roles pay $150,000 to $180,000 before super. Jobs and Skills Australia reports median full-time weekly earnings of $2,537 (ABS Employee Earnings and Hours, May 2025), a median hourly rate of $67, and about 203,200 people employed in the occupation. That median works out to about $11,000 a month before tax. Seek’s September 2026 averages are close: about $131,200 for software developers and $128,100 for software engineers.

Victorian salaries, including Melbourne, run slightly lower in the same guide: developers at $95,000 to $120,000, senior developers at $150,000 to $175,000 and solution architects at $170,000 to $200,000.
Why sources disagree. Payscale’s average for software developers (about $90,900 in July 2026) is far below Seek, Jobs and Skills Australia and Robert Walters. Its sample skews junior, so it’s better read as a floor than a market rate. Some Seek advertisements include super in the package, which lifts its averages slightly. Recruiter guides such as Robert Walters reflect roles they place, which tend to be in larger cities and larger employers.
What does an employee really cost? A worked example
A developer on a $160,000 salary costs an employer in Sydney about $197,000 a year, or about $115 per productive hour. Salary is only the starting point. Here is the arithmetic for a senior full stack developer at the Robert Walters midpoint, employed by a NSW business large enough to pay payroll tax.

Productive hours. A full-time year at 38 hours a week is 52 × 38 = 1,976 hours. Subtract four weeks of annual leave (152 hours, the National Employment Standards minimum), an assumed 10 public holidays (76 hours) and an assumed 5 sick days (38 hours): 1,976 − 152 − 76 − 38 = 1,710 hours.
Cost per productive hour: $197,025 ÷ 1,710 = about $115.
That’s before recruitment fees, management time, office space, and the hours spent in meetings, planning and onboarding rather than building. A business below the payroll tax threshold saves the $9,766, bringing the figure to about $110 an hour.
What is a software developer contractor’s day rate?
Senior software contractors in Sydney typically charge $800 to $1,100 a day ex GST, with principal engineers and architects at $950 to $1,300 or more. Contractors are paid only for days worked, so there’s no leave loading, but they usually manage their own super, insurance and equipment.

Canberra government work pays more. Hays figures reported by Hyperion IT in May 2026 put ACT software engineers at $110 to $140 an hour, senior engineers at $140 to $175 and solution architects at $155 to $220. At 7.6 hours a day, a senior ACT engineer at $160 an hour is about $1,216 a day, above the Sydney range. Talent International’s March 2026 figures show top-end averages of about $1,450 to $1,510 a day for AI principal engineers and cloud and enterprise architects.
Converting a day rate to an hourly rate: $900 a day ÷ 7.6 hours ≈ $118 an hour, close to the loaded employee cost. The difference is flexibility: you pay only for the weeks you need, and there’s no notice period or redundancy.
What do Australian agencies charge?
Small and mid-sized Australian software agencies commonly bill about $123 to $330 an hour, and large firms $330 to $495. Conduct’s 2026 guide gives those bands and puts enterprise consultancies higher again. Other 2026 agency guides cluster lower in the range, at about $120 to $200 an hour for a local team, with tech leads and architects above $200.
The rate looks high next to a contractor’s, but an agency hour usually buys more than one person’s time:
- A team with complementary skills (engineering, design, QA, DevOps) rather than one generalist
- Project management and a single point of accountability
- Code review, testing and deployment practices already in place
- Continuity when someone is sick, leaves or goes on holiday
- Insurance, warranties and, on fixed-price work, the risk of overrun

What do offshore developers cost?
Offshore developers cost substantially less per hour, and for well-specified work with strong local oversight they can be the right choice. Accelerance’s 2026 survey of outsourcing firms, one of the more rigorous sources, gives these US dollar ranges, converted at the Reserve Bank’s rate of about US$0.70 per A$1 in late September 2026:

Accelerance puts junior developers in Asia at US$24 to US$31. Other providers quote wider ranges, with some offshore staffing firms advertising lower junior rates and higher senior rates than Accelerance.
What the hourly rate doesn’t show:
- Management time. Someone onshore must write specifications, answer questions and review work. That person’s time belongs in the comparison.
- Time zones. South and Southeast Asia overlap reasonably with AEST; Latin America and Europe much less.
- Data and contracts. Privacy obligations, customer contracts or government requirements can limit what data offshore teams can access.
- Rework. Unclear requirements are more expensive to fix across distance and language.
